History
Since opening in 2009, Soda Bar has become a staple of San Diego’s music scene, hosting everything from smaller local artists to emerging indie acts and established touring bands. For instance, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard played Soda Bar on their very first US tour, while Kamasi Washington performed shortly after the release of his breakthrough record The Epic. With its forward-thinking booking slate and dedication to showcasing diverse genres and eclectic sounds, Soda Bar has solidified its reputation as a go-to spot for indie-heads and die-hard music fans.
Vibe
Soda Bar is one of San Diego’s best small venues. Its minimal decor, dim lighting, and dive bar feel conjure a close connection between fans and artists. At the same time, for better or worse, the layout is a little strange. Notably, the bar is located in the MIDDLE of the venue, splitting the audience into two viewing areas - one on either side. On crowded nights, it can feel smaller than it actually is, but if you’re able to navigate the bottleneck, the listening and viewing experience is top-tier (I’m a right side truther). And if you’re able to go in early and snag a booth, even better. Make sure to bring earplugs though; the sound system can get very loud.
Alcohol Situation
A well-stocked bar, several good beers on tap, and a very friendly and welcoming staff of bartenders who will have you covered faster that you’d expect.
Parking Situation
Street parking only, and sometimes it’s not easy. You’ll likely find yourself circling the suburbs and walking a good distance. Uber/Lyft highly recommended.
