Frankie and the Witch Fingers @ Belly Up Tavern

By Jeff Cubbison

Frankie and the Witch Fingers just can’t stop leveling up. From their humble beginnings as a basement act in Bloomington, Indiana, to their days as a rising buzz band in L.A., to now being one of the purveyors of the modern psych rock scene, the group was always an outstanding live act. And yet somehow, they continue to get better and better. With their new album Trash Classic currently galvanizing the scene, and with new keyboardist Jon Modaff onboard (and celebrating his birthday), Frankie cast an enchanting spell on a sold-out crowd at Solana Beach’s Belly Up Tavern. Propulsive basslines from Nicole “Nikki Pickle” Smith. Throttling drums from Nick Aguilar. Squelching synths from Jon Modaff. Head-spinning guitar solos from Josh Menashe. Wily, bug-eyed showmanship from Dylan Sizemore. A surprise trombone detour from Iguana Death Cult frontman Jeroen Reek. A crowd desperate to sing along and head-bang. Truly mesmerizing, spellbinding stuff. Scroll through the highlights below for proof.
