Flowers For The Dead - “Perfect View”
Washington D.C. shoegaze up-and-comers Flowers For The Dead have shared the gorgeous slow-burning new single “Perfect View,” off their forthcoming EP First Place, which arrives this Friday. Following up on last year’s excellent LP Magnolia, the trio’s new track is a poignant “love song” that tackles feelings of isolation, a longing for acceptance, and yearning for community. It’s a jangly indie track that pulls back a bit on the crushing shoegaze layers - haunting, bare-bones instrumentals and searing lyricism - with singer-guitarist Jessie Szegö softly cooing over downcast guitar and bass riffs while drummer Ten Bears steadies the ship with gently pulsating percussion.
The track arrives along with a vintage black-and-white-filmed music video also shot, directed, and edited by Szegö. “We wanted to convey that same emotion within the video, so we dressed our friends up as mimes and had them act out a love story,” she shared. “It was also my first time directing and editing a video of ours fully by myself, which was a blast and I hope to do more in the future!”
First Place was produced by Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr., Wild Pink, SASAMI). “First Place is collaborative and more representative of us as a group, rather than just my own brain. I think it's an evolution and you can really hear it in the confidence of our playing,” says Szegö. “We aren’t afraid to take up less space–having our instrumentation be bare-bones has helped us have our songwriting speak for itself, without all the frills and embellishments of distorted shoegaze.”
