Omo Cloud - “Ultimate Love”
Omo Cloud is the moniker of Cole De La Isla, a San Diego-based singer-songwriter who crafts haunting indie rock through a deeply personal, confessional lens. Over the past few years, the musician has released a string of excellent singles, and their musical journey will enter its next phase with the release of their debut album Mausoleum - a collection of 12 celestial tracks that toe the line between sweet and sorrowful, including breathtaking new single “Ultimate Love.”
"Ultimate Love” is a grunge-tinged ballad expressing the titular emotion in both a romantic and religious sense. Rollicking guitars, jangly rhythms, and searing choruses consume the track, with Cole’s expressive voice bursting at the seems and steering the ship.
“There’s a kind of despair that you can feel when you are brought up in a religious space — belief and disbelief. Trust and distrust,” De La Isla shared of the track. “I was doing a lot of work redefining what love is and what love can be. And ultimate love, that's silly. Community is important — platonic love. It’s not all or nothing.”
Mausoleum arrives on June 27 via Dusty Mars Records, and was produced, in part, with De La Isla’s longtime collaborator Andy Walsh. The album’s 12 tracks are a deep expression of De La Isla reclaiming their life in the wake of experiencing religious trauma and childhood sexual abuse.
“While I was never a true believer, this experience shattered my relationship to ‘faith’ of any kind,” they shared. “It's taken a really long time to get to a place where I feel like I have a voice again,” De La Isla says. “I also don't want it to overly inform a listener. The music belongs to them.”
“I feel like I spent a lot of my teenhood being very angsty and existential and cynical in a lot of ways, but I don't want that to be the takeaway of the record at all,” they added. “I feel the takeaway is actually a very optimistic one. We're all capable of growth and change, and it is a lot of work, but it is worth it. I want people to trust their gut. I want to help people connect with hard emotions — and I want people to be inspired.”
