History

Established in the early ’80s, the Che Café has a long-standing history as a hub for San Diego’s DIY music and activist communities. Known for hosting punk, indie, and experimental acts, it’s served as a launching pad for many of the best and most important local San Diego bands; Drive Like Jehu, Swing Kids, Unbroken, The Locust, Heroin, Antioch Arrow, Wavves, Weatherbox, SeeYouSpaceCowboy, The Frights, and even Blink-182 all cut their teeth at the Che early in their careers. In addition, many other former DIY acts from around the globe have made stops at the Che during their come-ups: Green Day, Nirvana, Turnstile, Mogwai, and more.

The venue has had a frosty relationship with UCSD over the years, with administration intervening and attempting to shut it down numerous times. Thankfully, it’s managed to survive after all these years, thanks to the persistent teenage and young adult volunteers who make up its managing collective.

Vibe

The Che boasts a welcoming grassroots vibe, with its cozy, hole-in-the-wall interior adorned with murals, zines, past show flyers, and an overall eclectic decor. It operates as a collective-run space, emphasizing inclusivity, activism, and artistic expression. The bands that play tend to fall in the punk, indie, and experimental spheres, with rowdy scenes often accompanying some of those heavier hardcore shows; you’ll often see young fans moshing, crowdsurfing, and even hanging from the ceiling rafters during sets. The venue’s outdoor space is an open courtyard with places to sit and artist merch for sale. There’s also a kitchen in the back where you can buy snacks and sometimes order vegan food. The Che’s youthful, rough-around-the-edges charm and commitment to independent music and activism make it a beloved institution in San Diego.

Alcohol Situation

N/A. The Che is a sober space - drinking, smoking, and drug use are prohibited on the premises. As such, you’ll often see a strong straight edge presence in the crowd, depending on the show.

Parking Situation

There are numerous parking lots and garages in walking distance on UCSD’s campus, but BE CAREFUL to park where permitted, and be sure to pay. Campus security loves to hand out parking tickets.
