History

Located in the renovated mission-style building that originally housed the Surfside Betting Center in the Del Mar Fairgrounds, The Sound opened in 2023 and is one of San Diego’s newest venues. Operated by The Belly Up, the space is built to accommodate mid-sized shows while delivering state-of-the-art acoustics and production. Well-established touring acts make up the bulk of the bookings, and as such, the programming skews slightly older and more alternative - in line with the venue’s North County location. In the past year, big acts like Modest Mouse, The Flaming Lips, Devo, Ziggy Marley, and Alvvays have performed at The Sound.

Vibe

The Sound boasts a modern and sleek industrial design, with a focus on premium sound quality and audience engagement. At 1900 capacity, it’s an ideal space for acts that are too big for smaller clubs, but not quite big enough for arena-sized shows. The layout includes a general admission standing floor with rows of VIP seating wrapped around it as well as a second story terrace. It maintains a laid-back but more upscale atmosphere, attracting a mix of curious locals eager to expand their horizons, as well as die-hard fans. The GA floor can get packed, so plan on posting up early if you want a spot up-close.

Alcohol Situation

There are multiple bars in all areas, offering beer, wine, and craft cocktails. The lines in the main viewing area can get a little long.

Parking Situation

Parking inside the Fairgrounds lot can cost a pretty penny, and there isn’t a whole lot of street options in walking distance. Try to carpool or Uber/Lyft.
