Negative Blast - ‘Destroy Myself For Fun’
Negative Blast is a San Diego hardcore unit comprised of ex and current members of Lewd Acts, Hour of the Wolf, Decent Criminal and Human Issue - singer Rainier Pesebre, guitarist Alexander Jacobelli, bassist Patrick Callaway, and drummer Hunter Martinez. Their music is sharp, raw, and uncompromising, blending traditional West Coast hardcore and classic ‘80s punk with explosive, feral energy. They’ve shared the stage with a number of the biggest names in the scene - Botch, Swing Kids, Loma Prieta, SeeYouSpaceCowboy, and more. Their debut LP, 2023’s Echo Planet, was a non-stop rollercoaster of punk aggression and anger, and one of our favorite records of that year from a local group.
Now, Negative Blast has followed that up with their fantastic sophomore album Destroy Myself For Fun, which dropped this past Friday via Three One G. Here, they’ve conjured a batch of tracks that color a bit outside of the sonic lines established on Echo Planet, but still full of incendiary guitar riffs, pummeling rhythms, and aggressive lyricism filtered through Pesebre’s snarling vocals. There’s a touch more melody to some of the songs, but the scorching riffage and defiant chaos remains intact. Highlights include the anthem-like “MAC DAWG” and the thorny, catchy closing ripper “DENIAL.”
